Complex document numbering systems suck. Especially when the document
might be applicable to a multiple contracts, orders, or parts.
That, and you'd have to come up with an ROI that would justify messing
with current document numbers.
But, biggest negative of all is that renumbering wouldn't help one bit for
all those that have copies of the documents with the old number.
I'd suggest that a random, unique, document number has no inherent
disadvantages if the document data is tracked and managed somehow. IMO,
you'd be best to just keep going as-is but enter all the document
information in a database (or simply a spreadsheet or table).
