Did you really mean to bash the spelling abilities of the entire U.S.
market? Most of my writing is for the U.S. market, and I don't seem to
have lost my ability to spell...

Depends on what style guide you're using. It also depends on who your
target audience is. I am one of many Irish people who no longer knows
how to spell because most of my professional writing is for the US
market.
