For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
From a personal perspective I really dislike hyphenation,
as someone else mentioned, for it disrupts the flow of
reading.
From a technical writing perspective, our docs include
a lot of technical terms, Unix commands, filenames,
URLs, and other chunks of text that include very
important hyphens. Hyphens at the end of a line
makes it even more difficult to sort out which are
part of the technical term, or part of an end-of-line
hyphen.
I know I'm mixing dashes and hyphens in the above
material, but I don't think most readers know the
difference.
I've come across URLs that are too long for a single
line, and have had a hyphen inserted automatically
that make it very frustrating and many users would
not know the problem and how to correct it to get
to the proper URL.
