Problems I have encountered:
1. Expand feature is not looking at relative file names for subdocs.
2. Zip is not renaming links to subdocs to new folder (it did the first
time I tried this when the doc was closer to 70 MB.)
3. Hidden Text is appearing although the document is being saved with
Hidden Text option turned off.

Questions:
1. How can I eliminate the above problems.

Don't distribute .doc files to users, unless you want them to modify the content, potentially rendering something in the docs inaccurate.

Don't use the Master Document feature, unless you have paranormal super powers. If you really have to send out .doc files to users, and you really have to use the Master Document feature, make sure your users have paranormal super powers, too.

Remember that the Show/Hide Hidden Text preference (like most other viewing preferences in Word) is up to the reader, not the author. In other words, your setting affects whether *you* see hidden text, not whether *I* see it.

Don't expect your Zip tool to modify text (like paths to documents) inside your .doc files--that would be a feature with hideous side effects.

Don't expect your Zip tool to interpret text (like paths to documents) inside your .doc files. Zip tools can only expand to satisfy the information they have, not the author's intention. In other words, if your document hierarchy depends on a particular file hierarchy, you have to save that information in the Zip file, not in the .doc file.

2. What better options are available (not likely to talk employer into
change.)

Those two statements seem mutually exclusive. In case they're not, somehow, I'd recommend creating Word docs any way you like and distributing the finished text as a PDF. They're searchable, can contain hyperlinks of all kinds (internal, external, mailto, ...), and cross-platform compatible.

3. What is the best way to use this list to find this or other answers in
the future.
