I tend to agree with your manager (perish the thought!). 12-point TNR looks too "horsy" to me on a standard printed page. I feel like I'm reading a children's book!
However, who says you have to stick with round numbers? Our current template uses 10.5-point TNR. Anything larger seemed too large, but 10-point TNR point just seemed a bit too hard on the eyeballs.
