Re: Is wildcard functionality well known enough?
Hi, guys...one of our product recently added the functionality of
doing wildcard searching via an asterisk. Nothing fancy, enter * in
place of any string that may be part of a larger string i.e., New
Yor* would result in New York, New York City, New York State, New
Yorkie, New Yorkshire Pudding, etc.
Now...with an audience of average PC literate corporate America, is
it enough to explain that the functionality now exists with a simple
sentence or two explanation or could there be those out there that
don't understand this functionality and need a full explanation along
with examples?
Note...* is the only form we support...no ? for single characters or
anything more complex.
John,
IME the ones who will take the time to read the sentence or two are already familiar with the concept and a brief description is plenty. Everyone else (that is, the people who wouldn't even bother to read the sentence or two) is oblivious and won't make use of the feature no matter how long an explanation you give them. If you stand behind them and coach them through it once, then the next time they need it they'll call you up and ask you to do it for them. YMMV.
