When I worked for an aerospace company, there was a human factors engineer
who verified that parts could be installed only one way. For example, if
the lid of a square box contained connectors, the screws attaching the lid
would be located so that the lid could only be attached when it was
oriented properly.
Manufacturing engineers wrote the procedures; QA and human factors verified
them. After having seen many of the procedures, I wish that tech writers
had been part of the team; the instructions would have been better written.
