For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
The one piece of advice I don't recall being
provided to Michelle is that she did exactly
what she, as a contractor, was expected to do.
Emphasize that you did exactly what the person
hiring you wanted you to do. Provide a design
for a calendar. You didn't choose the content,
you provided a service to render a design in
a marketable manner.
You have the capability to bring the same skills
to any assignment, whether you agreed with the
content or not.
I think you approached the interview properly,
and that they responded with a lack of ethics
by condemning the content without looking past
it to see at the overall design, which was the
reason for viewing the material.
They were the ones showing a low ethical standard
by their behavior, while you showed and took the
higher ground with both your behavior and caution
exhibited in warning them of the content.
