Funny -- I hadn't thought about it that way. I'd have to say that the
two share qualities, but certainly aren't the same.
With normal telecommuters, there is always the option to
call them in for a day or two or three to get any needed "face time." With
offshoring, your control and contact is only as good as:
* The person you actually convinced to go over there for a few months to
set up shop
* the local manager
* the relative willingness or unwillingness of the offshored employees to
humor you with conferene calls at 3 am, etc.
When those three factors don't work out as hoped, seems like first-class
intercontinental flights are quite full with the big execs going back and
forth trying to clean up the mess.
Although I'm sure the frequent flier miles are nice, it sounds like the
telecommuter is the better bet.
