There's very few UNIX, but many Linux and plenty of Windows projects. A growing
number seem to be cross-platform.

The Linux ones are very easy to get involved in, so long as you have about 5
gigabytes of free hard drive space. You can install Linux for free, and include
a boot manager that allows you to choose which operating system to run each time
that the computer starts.

And, just in case anyone is worried about boot managers, I've been using them
for over a decade without the least trouble.
