I do agree. But, in my experience, if you go to no meetings whatsoever, you are pretty well invisible to your company. So another goal of signing up for at least a few meetings is perhaps becoming visible...

When it is efficient, it is very very efficient. But when
it is bad, it is horrid. Sometimes sitting through a meeting
waiting for something relevant is like trawling the Great Five
Minnow Lake in a rowboat.

For the question of sitting through meetings, a lot depends on
your task, your product, your company culture, your prior knowledge,
your workload... a lot depends on a lot.
