"How would you get information from subject matter experts that are being...difficult? Let's say that they never had the time to speak with you, or they were reluctant to give you the information that you needed."

I have two answers to this one. A former boss told me that the best place to get requirements is in the men's room after the meeting. Since I am a woman, though, that one doesn't work...

My other favorite answer is that, if they won't give me the information I need, I will make it up and send out a draft. Nothing gets SMEs upset faster than that. The phone rings: "We aren't going to do it that way!" I answer: "What way are you going to do it?"

It works every time.
