It certainly IS a grey area. As a FTE you work for a company and that 
company works for the client.

As a contractor, you work for yourself, as a company that works for their 
client.

Clear as mud?

I'd argue that a contractor is by no means any type of partner. If I hire 
a painter or plumber, they work for me. They certainly are not my 
partners. In a partnership both parties are responsible for the delivery 
of a product or service to a third party.

But then again, we live in an age where it's acceptable to call sales 
clerks "associates". :rolleyes:
