Google Groups is a new service that google is trying out. We transferred a 10k member list there and it's working superbly:

There's already two techwriters lists, plus some specialized/geographical lists, one I created just to show folks.

They are trying to take over Yahoo! and other services. And, they operate in much the same way gmail does. It's not free, because there are targeted ads. It would probably cost someone $20-30/month for the hosting space to store the archives.
