What I can't understand is the number of technical writers who not only don't have one, but don't make any attempt to get one.


A lot of that may be because many people are willing to hire people (or at least they used to be) without having a technical background under the mistaken yet all-too-common belief that what we do is "just" writing.

If you're not expected to be competent, many people don't try to be.
