At the risk of being one of the inevitable "look-it-up-in-google" trolls... may I point out that Google has a little-known feature for finding definitions. In Google, type

term:definition

to get a definition of almost anything. It's usually pretty good; I use it all the time.

For example, type "api:definition" and the first hit is a pretty good definition of an API.
