As a presenter, I get no remuneration for speaking at the conference. I do
get a discount on the registration fee, and some nice perks, but my
intellectual property has greater value than whatever I might receive from
the STC. I also think the full presentation is the benefit people deserve to
get for attending. What's the point of paying to attend conference if you
can pick up the proceedings and get it all anyway for a fraction of the
cost?

Well, I've never been to the STC conference (tried once, when it was in Seattle, but was ultimately turned down), but I've been to a couple of others, including every one of the main WinWriters conferences. That one, you get slides from every presenter. And I cannot emphasize how useful that is.

The obvious one is that I can look back and refresh my memory on past presentations. I can also glean the basic from presentations that I was not able to attend (there are almost always at least 2 presentations per time slot that I want to hear).

But I also take notss, and the notes on the printes slides mean that said notes ate always relative to the slide presentation points.

If I am giving away my material, _I_ want to control that process. We
technical writers don't usually think much about our own copyrights unless
confronted with such a situation. Perhaps we should.
