So John,

I know that the last time this subject came up there was a group that
supposedly formed to discuss the issue off-list. Were there any
conclusions?

My challenge to you, and others who believe the STC should be doing the
certification, remains. What is it about the phrase above that the STC
could do better than the plethora of courses, certificates, and programs
currently available at various institutions currently?

The STC already lists any and all courses available that want to be listed
on their website. Perhaps all that is missing is an STC evaluation and
comparison of the courses and certificates offered. Perhaps a grading of
which principles are covered and to what depth they are covered in each
course. However, that could be a very complex and expensive undertaking.
Perhaps charging the various institutions for membership and the right to
be in the STC database along with use of the STC 'seal of approval' would
be a good start to the process. Maybe even the requirement that all
participating students become members for the institution to be
'approved'. Would certainly help the STC's bottom line AND move towards
standards in technical communication.
