You may encounter people whose companies forbid them from providing any
information other than "He or she worked here from this date to that
date". This doesn't happen because people are restraining themselves
from saying bad things about the candidate. It happens because people
have sued former employers for giving bad references, or even slightly
less than glowing ones, that caused them to lose out on the new job, and
companies want to avoid such litigation. So they resort to providing
minimal information as a way of minimizing risk.

Good luck!
