Agreed.

My goal is to collect a paycheck so my kids can
continue <insert activity list here>, have nice things, be guaranteed a good
education, and vacation somewhere every summer. My goal is to provide
a better quality of life for my children than my parents were able to
provide for me.

I've been making a mistake in that area, lately, that I intend to fix.

Also, IMHO, my goal (Dood's goal) does not get in the way of doing a
great job, of being professional, of being the best technical author
your company could want ... the two go together hand-in-hand.

I would add to Dood's definition one other thing that is more and more
important to me, "Job Satisfaction."

Actually, I think it was talked about and around ... in particular, I
think we were discussing Microsoft identifying never (or was it
seldom) used documentation topics and deleting them.
