wow -- a big thanks to all who provided comments. I now have several other views of the issue and will be working with the usability team to solve our terminology concern.

One of our goals for the new product is that the GUI should be fairly straight-forward and intuitive. If right out of the chute, the users are confused about upload/download, we have failed to meet our goal. And if the terminology is causing confusion among many many users (second-hand knowledge from customer support), there is indeed a problem, not just a training issue.

So.... onward!!!
