It is kind of amusing, isn't it? I think that perhaps it stems from the
world of technical writing being such a very "big tent." People that
call themselves technical writers run the gamut of those who simply edit
drafts created by subject matter experts to those that not only write
the documentation, but contribute to (and even code) the "user
experience." As Longhorn makes working on the GUI more accessible to
less "technical" tech writers, it's probably a good thing that the STC
is doing this. I suspect this is more of a reaction to the blurring of
user assistance and user experience in the upcoming Windows than
anything else.
