Ummm... yeah. Give her something to do. THERE's your "immersion learning".

There's nothing like a project to work on to get you up to speed quickly.
To be honest, I don't see any really useful reason to get her onto lots of
listervs, or to send her to STC meetings. Teaching her how to BE a tech
writer is not your job (you can certainly point out what resources are
available to her, though). Helping her to document the products she's
working on is much more important and central to her (and the company's)
success.

If you want to ease her in a bit, give her an already-created document
with markups so that she can take care of entering the changes. In doing
that, asking questions, verifying information, she can learn more about
the product, the process at the company, and tech writing while making a
contribution and justifying her paycheck.
