Personally, I am starting to wonder whether this distinction is one of those half-truths like the need to localize a North American manual for English readers that greatly exaggerates differences. That is, it refers to real differences that exist or existed once, but makes those differences seem deeper and more important than they really are.

Evidence from fifteen years ago does suggest that, in magazines and newspapers, Europeans were far more likely to use sans serifs than North Americans. But now? One poster on this list has partly debunked this distinction for France. I wonder whether the omnipresent Americanization of world culture hasn't imported North American font preferences to other parts of Europe, too.

I admit that I know nothing definite. But I do wonder.
