IMO, what is "flawed" is the thinking that any "convention"
is necessarily an absolute. Without trying to reopen the
interminable exchange, even today there are certain very
specific instances (such as the monospace type example)
where double spacing might be called for.

I may have just excluded myself from the "single-space
fans" category, but I don't really pay any more attention to end-of-sentence spacing than most readers. I wouldn't exclude writing candidates based on their choice of
spacing in their own web sites or resumes regardless of
which they chose, so long as they're capable of
subliminating their personal preferences to the style
guide and aren't going waste working time trying to
rework the company's formats to suit them.
