Maybe 8 hours isn't too far off...or is it just the way I work?

Nah, especially if all the things you included research, edits,
proofing, productionizing, etc. are included. I have found 8 hours a
page to be a good estimating tool. I take it down to as low 4 sometimes
in house because we often skip quality steps here.

I have found it pretty easy to convince most clients of the necessity of
time. It's better to show it through milestones though. Only those
clients who don't actually care whether the work is of professional
quality have a hard time with the estimates. I shave time off by having
fewer reviews and de-scoping the final deliverable when the client needs
me to.

However, the above is based on a 20-year career and I suspect these days
I'd be doin' more trimmin' than in the past.
