My belief is that it can be called whatever you and your writers decide works best: Pane, field, region, etc.. The most important thing for the readers is that once you decide what to use, be consistent throughout your document.
I sometimes find it necessary to name (using call-outs) the areas of the screen or hardware that I will be discussing, at the front of the document, chapter, or procedure. Then I always refer to that area using the same name throughout the document.
