This adjacency has little to do with love of symmetry. And they're usually
adjacent in more than one dimension.
In a multi-story building, the men's and women's bathrooms almost always
share a common wall and are stacked on top of each other so that the water
supply lines and waste pipes are kept together. This uses less pipe and
makes both the initial construction and ongoing maintenance easier.
