I'm with him. Admittedly, the last time I earned my living as a programmer was a summer job in 1965; but my "formal" training in programming languages started with numeric machine language and an early assembly language called SPS on the IBM 1620, and ended with a couple flavors of Fortran and a waste-of-time BASIC course. Stuff I actually read books about (parts of them, anyway) include RPG II, Pascal, and COBOL. Everything else I've touched--C, C++, LISP, Javascript, VBscript, HTML, XML (yeah, I know they aren't all programming languages) has followed the Berlitz immersion method. I used to have posted on my wall a large "Chomsky was right!" sign, which was my way of explaining my stare-at-an-example-until-it-makes-sense technique.
