Do any of you have experience in public relations? Have you ever been asked
to step in and help with press releases or other public relations projects?
In your opinion, would technical writers benefit from public relations
training in addition to technical writing training?

Krysta,
My degree is in Communications/PR, but the bulk of my professional
experience is as a Tech writer. Because of my background, I've often been
asked to serve as a sort of hybrid TW/PR specialist.
In short, I've found this combination of skills and experience to be very
beneficial - opening doors that may not have opened otherwise. And
personally, I find it rewarding and challenging. PR projects allow me to
exercise and enhance facets of my writing skills that tech writing
(typically) does not. And, from a tech writer's perspective, I've always
found it useful (or at the very least, interesting) to expand my insight
into the manner in which my employer wishes to communicate products and
services to the market.
If you have any other questions, feel free to follow up with me offline.
Good luck!
