Fellow armchair economists, hold your fire... there are also lots of other reasons for the trade deficit, but let's keep it offlist.

The way I understand it, those US cars that have improved their design
and so forth are enjoying greater sales. The free market forced them
to compete or die.

It depends... Chrysler was quite competitive, but not after Daimler got through with them... quality/competition was not an issue. I'm expecting any day now for big offshore IT firms to start buying up troubled US IT companies on the cheap.
