TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Don't know if this has anything to do with it, but it used to be quite common
to refer to young children and animals as "it", even if they had a known
gender. And it's not necessarily personifying the robots to give them human
names--it could just be simplifying. It's easier to refer to "Stanley" than
to "Unirobot 65G37A/REV0003"--it could be the robot's "kennel name"--refer to
my signature below for "registered" vs. "kennel" names ;-)
