Not wanting to be strident or anything, and I'm
sure others will answer your specific questions,
but...

If the dismissed team was competent, you could
make hay by hiring them back as contractors/1099.
The advantages in doing this must be obvious, but
don't overlook the hidden overhead costs you'd be
paying in going with an established outside
company. As an agency employee or agency
contractor, my rate rarely approaches half of what
is billed to the client. Offer you past writers
200% of their past salary and no benefits, you'll
probably come out well ahead financially and have
a knowledgeable, revitalized bunch of 1099ers to
get the work done.

I love happy endings :-)

I am available as 1099 contractor if you need
options.
