My guess is that most people will respond with a list of
things that directly improve the day-to-day life of tech
writers, like telecommuting policies, but at the VP level,
the odds are slim that you would have much of anything to
do with your individual contributors. You'd be up to yout
neck in long-term (as in "next quarter") corporate planning
for department goals, performance metrics, infrastructure
planning, etc. Your biggest impact on individuals would
be in the wrangling of budget and the selection of the
first and second level managers who would be tasked with
bringing the department's performance up to or keeping it
at the levels that would justify additional allocations
and protect your department against possible cutbacks and
layoffs. Most of the decisions you'd have to make to
accomplish this would result in the writers branding you
an utter bastard.
