This may or may not help?
Check what Word has inserted in the field. You probably know how to do this
but just in case...
1. Highlight the field 'i' (doesn't matter if you get the text around it)
2. Right click the highlighted field and select 'Toggle Field Codes'
This displays the field code rather than the result of the cross reference.
A normal Cross Reference field displays {PAGEREF yourbookmark \h }.
Perhaps, in your document, the field code (what the toggled field is
displaying) displays like this: {PAGEREF yourbookmark \*roman\*
MERGEFORMAT } ???
If so, it is the \*roman that is converting the page number to roman
numerals.
In this case it doesn't matter how the page number is formatted on the
referred to page. You are specifying the format for how the field displays
the number.
