This is only partially relevant to the current post, but very much
relevant to the subject of "can programmers also write well".

Somehow, I got subscribed to the "Dr. Dobb's Journal". I only understand
10% of what I read, but what I did read was the story of their award of
the 2004 Excellence in Programming Award.

It describes a developer who besides having a grocery list of
development credits, besides holding technical chairs for a number of
ANSI and ISO committees, besides being on the technical staff of Bell
Labs, and besides authoring a library full of C/C++ technical manuals,
is a published science fiction writer for 30 years and has been
acknowledged as "a clear and stirring writer and a programmer's

Oh, BTW...he has a Ph.D in nuclear physics.
