Check out the articles at by Fred Leis and Karl Fast. There's a great glossary of taxonomic terms, and I like to follow their lead. They make things clear, and they avoid the O word.

Ontology and taxonomy are being defined in so many different ways these days that you have to ask "in what sense are you using that?" almost every time it is used. (And the second question is, "And what do you want to use it for?")
