Re: Trends in Help authoring?
...the tools for indexing the resulting pages are somewhat primitive.
But it does work.
Hey, who are you calling primitive? :)
In addition to a beautifully laid out "back-of-the-book" style index,
HTML Indexer can also create the .hhk file you need to populate the
Index tab in your Microsoft HTML Help system. This requires no
additional indexing effort on your part--to add it to your HTML Help
system, just specify the resulting .hhk file in your HTML Help project,
using the HTML Help Workshop.
Over the next few weeks, my job will be to develop an efficient and bug-free process for creating source text in Word (for review and revision) and using that text to create an HTMLHelp system that can be updated by simply updating the Word source files and recompiling. Not sure that's possible, but here's hoping!
That workflow was perfect for creating WinHelp--ah, the good old days--
and, while it's *possible* with HTML Help, the problem will be the HTML generated by Word: notorious.
I'd get an HTML editor, instead--I like HomeSite, but there are a
jillion to choose from--and create the source text there, especially
since it doesn't sound like you'll be creating print docs from the
same source files.
