So what's the best strategy? Do I play nice for awhile, and try to build
trust and respect, while giving time for my new boss to realize how lost my
naysayers are, so that he will eventually back me in pushing for higher
standards? Or do I stick to my principles and edit according to normal
standards, and if they can't handle it, too bad?

There are three approaches that can work. One is Do it this way because I'm in charge and I said so. You've tried that one and found that in your situation it fails. The second is I'm here to provide a service and you will get credit for better documents if you take advantage of that service. You haven't tried that one and we don't know if it will work. Given your description of the situation, though, I kinda doubt it. The third approach is Let's sit down and go through this together, with a style guide by our side, and I'll help you understand why I'm making the editorial suggestions I'm making. This is the most time-consuming approach, but you gotta do what you gotta do, and this may be the only one that works for you.

One other thing. Red is for schoolteachers. Blue is for editors. You've already learned why.

HTH,

Dick
