How in the world people could come up with such a way to annoy others is
beyond me. I would tend to doubt that companies ever got back their
investments in this technology. And I believe they must have laid out
some pretty good bucks, judging from the relative sophistication of the
technology.

It would be understandable behavior from someone who had just discovered
the Internet, and who therefore knew that it was possible to throw an ad
or message at everyone in the world, but hadn't yet realized that this
was already being done to the point where the recipients were sick of
it. But presumably, everyone knows how people feel about this sort of
thing by now.
