Assuming you wouldn't need to recreate the PDF unless something had changed, you'd have to open the Word file to make the changes...or at least to update the TOC, index, cross-references, and other fields.

As long as you've got the file open, you might as well use PDFMaker.

No doubt I'm missing the point, here...
