IMHO: Automatically updating styles is indeed "often useful," but also
dangerous. Better to use a macro to update styles *on demand*. Also, please
note the two separate style-update settings: the one in the Templates and
Add-ins dialog box and the one in the Modify Style dialog box. Better to
leave both of them unchecked (in the latter case, you must clear the check
box for each individual style).

By automatically updating styles, you essentially invite Word to change
things without your permission. As Shauna Kelly (a Microsoft Word MVP)
writes, "If Automatically Update is ticked, un-tick it. There is not enough
aspirin on the planet to cure all the headaches this causes when it is
ticked!"
