I just found this resource this week and have found it valuable. Hope it
can help you.

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/index.htm

It's a collection of articles and tips by Word MVPs. Many of them have
to do with graphics and Word's inner workings. I learned a lot of new
tricks and I've used Word since it first came out in the 80s.

Some others that may help:

And for what it's worth: I've found graphics much more stable and
easy-to-handle when I format graphics with the option to be "in-line
with text" (In Word XP: Format > picture > Layout (tab) > In-Line with
text). In my experience, "anchoring" never works very well in any
version of Word, although Word XP is eons ahead of previous versions in
terms of stability.
