I've had trouble after making an addition that
ends where the target of the cross-reference begins.
The new material tends to be become part of the target
of the cross-reference.

I've also found it risky to copy and paste material
that includes cross-references. I just spent an
hour or two yesterday doing exactly that, in hopes
that a nice recent version of Word will not suffer
from the same old quirks, but I can't say for sure
that my document has survived unscathed. Do as I
say, not as I do.
