TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
My experience is that technical people (me included) like to be able to skim
the first page without any additional bother, because that's where the
summary should be. They're looking for specific information, they want to
know if this is the document that will provide this information, and they
aren't likely to be impressed by anything that will slow them down.
Good point-- there's no value gained from annoying one's readers.
I'll have to put a bit more thought into this. What it'll ultimately come
down to is whether it's more annoying to have cluttered footers or an extra
page at the beginning of the document. Both can be a bit cumbersome.
To complicate matters, I have very little control over the placement of
proprietary information. If it doesn't fit in the footer, it has to go
somewhere on the front or back of the cover page. Sigh.
Perhaps I could shrink the fine print by a point or two so that it doesn't
consume as much real estate. Long live legibility! : - )
