And as a dictionary aficionado, my personal opinion is that it's an off-brand dictionary at any price. Some of us are in the Meriam-Webster camp. Some are in the American Heritage camp. Some insist on the OED. There are even some fans of the Random House, the New World, and a few others. But I've never heard anyone mention the Webster's New Universal. That's not to say it isn't a truly fine dictionary that will meet the needs of any writer; it's just to say that if you get into a pissing match with your boss about the spelling of some word, you're probably going to want to be using a dictionary your boss has heard of.

Good point. People tend to assume that "Webster's" is a reputable name for a dictionary. But in fact, anybody can put out a dictionary -- or other reference book -- and call it "Webster's". That's because Noah Webster didn't do a proper job of enforcing his trademark, which then became a generic term. Like "aspirin" (which also used to be a trademark).
