It's not the tool that's the problem. It's how it's used.
I've seen excellent presentations that took advantage of PPT's ability to
present text, charts, graphics, etc., as a supplement to the speaker's
content.
I've also suffered through the "I'm going to read you each and every bullet
point on the next twenty-seven slides without giving much connecting
information" presentations. And guess what - not all of these were PPT
presentations. Some used chalkboards, whiteboards, flip-charts, etc.
Whenever I train presenters, I encourage them to prepare for the inevitable
AV failure. I pound it into their heads that "content is king" and that
anything they're using to illustrate that content is SUPPLEMENTAL and should
be thought of as a resource, and not as the core of their presentation.
It's basic public-speaking skills that are lacking here.
