Dan: I learned this back in '94 when I approached a corporate decision maker with a demo of VAX inventory software and whipped out a slick little 40 pg shirt pocket sized manual (mostly pictures) for the operators I had distilled from over 400 pages of text someone else wrote. They bought the software and asked for 300 copies of the pocket manual and 1 copy of the original binder size manual. The pocket manuals were a profit bonus at $10 each.

Back in the good old days (say, 1989 or 90), produced a "pocket guide" for Tandem's COBOL85. The manual was two three-ring binders, totalling 1300 pages of 8 1/2 x 11" sheets, two sided. The "pocket guide" was approximately the length and width of a punch card (remember those?) and about 3/4 inch thick. It had to be slightly stronger paper than the manual. It covered only the syntax, plus error message numbers and explanations. Seemed like a convenient package for barebones programming reference.

On a customer visit (ever had one of those?), when I asked about their thoughts on the pocket guide, they said that the manual was easy to find, but the pocket guide kept getting lost on their desks....
