My ex-roommate when I was in college worked at Aldus. In one of my classes,
we also took a tour of the offices. I remember an early usability lesson.
Seems there was a tool on the toolbar that they were having trouble
designing an icon for. The tool didn't have an abstract concept. So they
decided to just put a minature version of the hardware tool as the icon.
Experienced pasteup people would recognize the icon and know what it
represented, people new to page layout could be taught, as the concept
needed to be taught for laying out pages anyway.
