Oh, man. Where to begin?

First, I hope that's not your real name, as this is
searchable on the web. As a manager, your employee
issues are confidential. And I certainly hope your
"font monkey" isn't on the list...

Second, you mentioned you've been working with him and
he's improving. Based on the criteria for his job
(core competencies and all that) you should score him
appropriately. Mention where he's improved, and where
he needs to improve.

Third, pay is not an issue, nor should it be. I know
plenty of managers who make less than their employees.
Granted, it's usually the case of a "legacy" employee
who's responsible for a lot but doesn't want a
management job vs. a newer manager.

Fourth, this is a conversation you NEED to have with
HR, not the TechWr-L Opinion Pool. While we all
cannonball in, you're still treading water as to what
to do. Talk to HR and see if they can't throw you a
lifeline. And, given you're a new manager, talk to
YOUR mentor/manager.

Now, to be blatantly honest, I laughed hysterically
when I read your post. I truly hope you learn from
this and try to keep confidential info off public
forums. But, you're two years out of school in a
difficult position. You're allowed some mistakes. But,
hope that this post doesn't come back to bite you.

Sorry, but I'm just calling it as I see it.

Good luck!
